Memorial to John Fleming (ob.1802) by Peter Mathias Van Gelder (1739-1809)
Memorial to John Fleming (ob.1802) by Peter Mathias Van Gelder (1739-1809). Photo: Jane Wildgoose. Inscription: 'Sacred to the memory of John Fleming, esq. who died on Friday the 29th January, 1802, in the 53rd year of his age, to the great regret and concern of his numerous friends, and acquaintances, and servants, being a kind and indulgent Master. His manners and address were pleasing. He was ever desirous of contributing to the Pleasure and Amusement of his Friends, whom he at all times received with Cheerfulness and Humanity. Of a Disposition generous and humane, he felt for the distress of others, and his Heart and Hand were at all times open to their Relief. In conversation he anxiously avoided every thing which tended to injure the Character or Reputation of others; and repressed with Indignation Calumny and Defamation. It would be unjust to his Memory not to record that he was fit in his Friendship, faithful to his Promises, and that his Honour and Integrity were unsullied. This monument was erected by his afflicted Widow, to whom he left his estate; and after her death, to John Fleming Barton Willis, his second cousin, who feels the most sincere affection and gratitude for the Memory of his deceased Benefactor.'
